Neck Lift
As we age, the tissues of the lower part of the face and neck descend. While this gives the appearance that the skin itself is sagging, it is actually the muscle, and the tissue overlying the muscle underneath the skin which have fallen, giving a heavy look to the lower face and neck. Many people also have deposits of fat underneath the chin, which make the problem worse. The lower part of the face changes from a nice youthful oval shape to an older, heavier, more squared off look. The lower border of the jaw loses its crisp edge and begins to blend in with the skin of the neck.
The treatment involves removing the extra fat along the lower border of the jawline and into the neck. This removes the fullness from both the neck and from the jowls along the jaw. The muscle underneath the skin is then repositioned to its original position. The skin moves up with the muscle, tightening the jawline and smoothing the neck beautifully. The incision is completely hidden behind the ear. The lower part of the face regains its oval appearance, the jawline has a nice crisp edge to it, and the neck becomes smooth and thin .
Neck Lift: What You Need to Know
- Scars from a neck lift hide in the creases around the bottom and back of the ear and in the hair, making them unnoticeable when healed.
- A well-done neck lift will smooth and tighten the neck, eliminate central neckbands, sharpen the jaw line, and improve the jowls.
- Since the lower part of the face and neck tend to show signs of aging first, a neck lift is commonly performed by itself.
- Facial plastic surgery tends to feminize traditionally male features, so we have to be very careful not to over-do things in male patients.
- This is why a neck lift (not a facelift) is what we often recommend for our male patients. A neck lift will soften the jowl, improve the neck and, sharpen the jaw line in a man.
- By changing the procedure slightly, we can enhance and highlight the more delicate features in women, making it a very versatile option for both men and women.
